Here’s Why The Popular Vote Doesn’t Decide The Election

Almost a year after the 2016 presidential election, people are still complaining about how Hillary Clinton should be president because she won the popular vote. I’ve seen posts by some of these people asking “why should your vote count more than mine?” (can’t find the Facebook post to get the link, sorry). The answer is, it shouldn’t, and that is why we have the Electoral College. While I’m not saying it is perfect (I’ll talk more about this either later in the post or in another post), it is better than the popular vote being the deciding factor.

The way the Electoral College works is that each state has a certain amount of elected representatives who cast their votes based upon the outcome of their state’s popular vote (at least, that’s what they’re supposed to do). In most of the states, the candidate who the majority of the representatives vote for receives all of the votes from that state. However, there are exceptions, in which case each candidate gets any and all votes that are for them from the states that don’t follow the aforementioned all-or-nothing way.

There are two groups of elected representatives who cast their votes, the Senate and the House of Representatives. In the Senate, each state elects two Senators. In the House of Representatives, the number of representatives to be elected is based upon a state’s population. For example, as you can see in the below map of the number of seats in House of Representatives each state has (I don’t know if is correct or not, but it gets the point across), California, a heavily-populated state, has 55 representatives who vote, while Rhode Island, a state with a much smaller population than California, only has 4 seats in the House of Representatives.

Some of you may be wondering why there are two groups. Basically, when the current system was being created, people in small states were worried that the larger states would control the country if the system were based on population alone. This would be a problem because different states have different interests, obviously. However, the larger states didn’t think it would be fair if the smaller states had an equal say in things, since obviously the larger states were speaking on behalf of much more people. As a compromise, it was decided that there would be two groups of representatives, one based on population (House of Representatives) and one where every state has an equal say (Senate), and any bills would have to be passed by both groups in order to find their way to the president’s desk and be signed into law. I would add a link to a webpage that has more details, but I just wrote this all down from the top of my head from what I remember from a very detailed year of US I with Dos, and I’m too lazy I don’t feel like looking one up right now. However, feel free to use a Google search for more info. A good search term would probably be “origins of US electoral system” or something like that.

Circling back to the first paragraph of this post, this is exactly how no one person’s vote counts more than another’s (except for, of course, the elected Congressmen and women, but they’re supposed to vote the way their state did, as I stated above). If the election were decided on the popular vote alone, the larger states would have control of the Unites States simply because they have more people living there. The problem with that is that the economy of each state varies. For example, while one state’s economy may be centered around agriculture, another state’s economy may revolve around industry. Let’s say the agricultural state is less populated than the industrial state. If popular vote was the deciding factor in any decision affecting the economy, then the industrial state would have control, and while laws, reforms, and regulations that may help industry would most likely be passed, laws, reforms, and regulations that may help agriculture would be tossed aside, leaving the agricultural state to suffer.

Of course, as with any system, there are flaws. Personally, I think we should keep the idea of representatives, but divide each state into as many sections as it has votes (for example, Rhode Island would be divided into six sections, four for the House of Representatives and two for the Senate), and the outcome of the popular vote of each section should decide one vote. Also, it should not be a winner-take-all system, as it is in most states. Before I really get going outlining my plan for Electoral College reform (which I actually do have, because it was a history project of mine in high school), I’m going to stop myself, because that isn’t why I started this post. Another time, perhaps.

Before I begin to bore you (if I haven’t already), I’m going to end this post. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below, or even use Google to try and find an answer. Thanks for reading!

TCWT Blog Chain Post: June 2014

Hey! So, the blog chain is back again this month! This month’s prompt is: What are your thoughts on movie-to-book adaptations? Would you one day want your book to be made into a movie, or probably not?

This is a really interesting topic, one that I’ve thought about many times, probably because of all the crappy adaptations I’ve seen. Let me start with the absolute worst movie-to-book adaptation ever: the Percy Jackson and the Olympians movies.

First of all, can I just say that they’re supposed to be 12 years old, not 16. Now, that might be easier to overcome if the whole freaking plot wasn’t about Percy turning 16! I mean, c’mon now. When he turns 16, the prophesy is fulfilled. How the hell is that possible if he’s already 16 in the first movie?!

Sorry. Kinda lost it there. Anyways, another movie-to-book adaptation that irks me is the Harry Potter series. And not because of the main plots, but because he had blue eyes in the movie. Like, really guys, you couldn’t have given Daniel Radcliffe color contacts? I literally yell at the TV “NO HE DOESN’T!” anytime the Harry Potter movies are on and someone says, “Oh, Harry, you have your mother’s eyes,” (seriously, ask my mom- it annoys the hell out of her, and has earned me some groundings before).

Don’t even get me started on A Series of Unfortunate Events. First, can I ask why they would put three books into one movie when movies can never cover one full book? And it were really inaccurate. Also, because of the whole three-books-one-movie thing, it missed a lot of things. No. Just, no.

Anyways, I’ve yet to find a movie that meets my expectations from the book. Although Harry Potter is fairly accurate with the storyline, I still can’t get past the whole blue-eyes thing. So, I really don’t think the book-to-movie adaptations are good. At all.

That being said, if someone wanted to make a movie out of my book, that would be the highlight of my life right there. Yes, I know I’m being a little hypocritical here, but I’m holding on to the delusional hope that my book-to-movie adaptation would be different than all the rest.

Plus, it’d be freaking awesome to see my book title on the theater preview signs.

I guess because it’s made into a movie, that would mean my book is a hit. It’s awesome by everyone else’s terms, not just my own. And that’s really an amazing thought.

Alright, I’m trying to figure out more to say, but I really can’t explain it better than that. Plus, I have to go work on my Dos quarter project. Bye!

P.S. Sorry to those of you who are in a different time zone than me, and who waited for all of their day for this post. While I am getting this up at around 7 for my time zone, I’m sure there are some of you who are already into the early morning of June 8.

Some People….

Hey. So, it finally happened. The moment I’ve been dreading. My classmates have discovered my blog. Not that I wasn’t expecting it. I just don’t know how the hell G1 did it (no, I’m still not using names- I don’t care if my classmates can read this, it’s still on the internet for everyone to see, and it’s not for me to disclose their names). Z said G1 was hanging with a small group of kids before school, looking up all of his friends for fun, and he ended up Google-ing “Samantha Murphy.” Which, by the way, is the name of some singer, and I also think I’ve typed my name all of 3 times on this blog. So I have no freaking clue how he found my blog from those search terms.

But, the thing is, when they found this, they didn’t just go, “Cool, Sam has a blog.” No, they had to tell everyone. And let me tell you, when I say everyone, I mean everyone. I was alerted to this second period by Z, who was like, “So, been on Sammi Talk lately?” Also, I was walking into Chem and I heard G2 saying to my friend M, “…Sam’s failing history….” Which reminds me….

Hey, newsflash for you: that post was written on March 15, 2014. The beginning of 3rd quarter. A lot has changed since then. And I mean a lot. And by the way, just because I was failing history doesn’t mean I’m stupid. I have a genius IQ, in case you skipped that part. I got a higher score than you on the placement exam, and I know that because I got the highest score. Not only that, but my score was the top 1% in the country. So shut up. You know nothing about me (You think I put my life on this blog? Ha! As if!).

Anyways, I don’t really care what everyone thinks. I made this blog knowing some people I know would find it. I just didn’t expect it to be freaking everyone. But, it doesn’t matter. I’m just going to continue on normally. So, the post I probably would’ve written today is below.

I got braces yesterday. They hurt like hell, but no where near as much as last time (yes, I had braces before but didn’t wear my retainer because my orthodontist didn’t tell me anything, including that my teeth would revert back to the way they were if I didn’t wear it). I got navy blue and orange for the colors, for the Detroit Tigers. No, I’m not a fan of the Tigers (Red Sox all the way!), but I was on the Tigers when I played minor league for five years, and this year I’m officially helping coach the team, so I decided to get Tigers colors.

In other news, Burban’s not dead! I know, I know, this required a little back story. Okay, so last night she ate an azalea, which are apparently “moderately toxic” to cats. Needless to say, I was freaking out. I was like “Oh my God what do we do?!” And it turns out, she’s fine. So, that’s good. On a side note, though, she’s getting sooo big. Definitely not the tiny 10-week-old we got in October, although she’s still a kitten.

Alright, that’s it for now. I need to go work on some more of my history fourth quarter project. Bye!

-Sam

P.S. I just want to make it clear that I don’t blame G1 for any of this. He’s a really nice guy, and I know he didn’t mean for it to escalate the way it did. It’s not his fault in any way. Also, Z has no fault in this, either. He was just the messenger. And as Dos would say, don’t shoot the messenger.

School Tomorrow

Hey! Well, February vacation’s over, at least for me and my brothers (although I’m sure that they would disagree and tell me it’s not over until they get to school 🙂 )- my sister has tomorrow off, thanks to a teacher training day at her school. I’m happy to go back (like I used to be before those assholes at the public school started to bully me), except for the fact that I have a Dos quiz tomorrow. Which, by the way, quizzes are harder than tests. Alright, sorry for the short post, but there’s a request for a post (well, maybe not exactly a request, but I made it one 🙂 ) and I’m so excited that I’m going to start it now! Bye!

-Sam

It’s Vacation!!

Hey. Well, my February vacation started a little while ago today, which means (probably) longer, more thorough posts, and I’m definitely going to do my best to get as much of Running written as possible. I actually don’t have a shit-load of homework to do over break, surprisingly. All I have is a Dos essay and to study a bunch for Spanish. Alright, sorry for the short post, but I have to go. I meant it to be longer, really I did, but I need to go now. Sorry! Bye!

Homework, Homework, And More Homework

Hey. Well, as the title may show, I have a lot of homework tonight. Which means, I won’t be able to get up AJ’s favorite memory post today. Sorry! But I have to write a Dos essay and finish an English essay, both due tomorrow. And I’m NOT going to just go “oh, there’s probably gonna be a snow day tomorrow” like most kids do. So, sorry for the short post, but I wanted to keep my posting streak, and I have homework to do. Bye!

The Events Of The January 31, 2014 BCHS US History I Honors Class

Hey. Guess what happened in Dosory (Dos + history, in case you didn’t get that XD )? So, I’m taking notes, right? While I look something up to get more details on it (while Dos is talking about un-noteworthy stuff), I look up just in time to hear everyone start laughing their asses off. And this is what awaits me on the board:

That, my friends, in case you couldn’t tell (in which case, I don’t blame you XD ), is Dos’ drawing of the United States Of America. Just look at it for a second. You can see that he added in the abnormally-large Cape Cod Penninsula after he drew the whole thing, if you look closely. I started laughing so hard, I was crying. Alright, there’s your laugh of the day! On a side note, I’ve posted EVERY SINGLE DAY THIS MONTH!! WOOT WOOT! Okay, that’s it. Bye!

-Sam

Lots Of Homework

Hey. Sorry, but this is going to be a short post, because I have a lot of homework to do. I have to memorize my English speech (which I still haven’t given yet), I have to do four source outlines for Dos (history), plus I have to put together two powerpoints for English! UGH! But I guess that’s all part of high school, right? Anyways, I just wanted to keep my posting streak. Bye!

History And Geometry Midterms

Hey. Well, my Dos (history) midterm wasn’t really hard like I thought it was going to be, and my geometry midterm was a piece of cake (I think). I’m so glad to have those done, but I have my art midterm tomorrow. Go on, laugh at me, but his one test that we had was SO FREAKING HARD, and this is a midterm. How the hell am I supposed to be optimistic about this?! I’m not. Alright, that’s it for this post. I have another one coming, so don’t worry about the shortness of this one. Bye!

-Sam

Chemistry And English Midterms

Hey. As the title says, I had my Chem and English midterms today. They were okay. I had a little trouble with chem, but overall it was pretty easy.  I have my Dos (history) midterm tomorrow, though, so I have to go study for that now. Plus I have to finish my quarter project, because I’ve been procrastinating 😦 Sorry for the short post, but I wanted to keep my posting streak. Bye!
